The Brief?

Bring the Past to Life with Animated Motion Graphics and Live Footage

Cardiff Castle is a historic gem at the heart of the city, with a story spanning over 2,000 years. The challenge was to create a video  that showed the castle’s interesting history. It needed to be fresh, engaging, and easy for all ages to enjoy.

The video had to show historical information without using a voiceover. It also needed to keep a strong connection with the audience. The idea was simple. One ticket, carried by the wind, links different times in the history of Cardiff Castle.

Animated  characters from different historical periods would interact with the ticket. They would guide viewers through time. This way, people can learn about the castle’s importance.

The Creative Challenge

The project presented several creative challenges that shaped its unique approach and execution:

  • Combining live-action footage with animated motion graphics. Every historical figure, from Roman soldiers to Victorian aristocrats, had to interact naturally with the castle’s real-world settings.
  • Engaging storytelling without dialogue: Without voiceover, the story used visual techniques. It relied on dynamic text and lively character animation to share historical information clearly.
  • Striking a balance between education and entertainment: Striking a balance between educational content and entertainment value was crucial. The video aimed to educate viewers about Cardiff Castle’s significance while captivating their imagination with engaging visuals.

Creative Development & Planning

To bring this idea to life, we used a mix of high-quality live-action footage and well-made animated motion graphics.

  • The Celtic Girl and the Ticket: The video starts with a young Celtic girl finding a strange ticket. This begins her journey through time. This motif serves as a thread connecting various historical eras within Cardiff Castle’s storied past.
  • A Journey Through Time: As the ticket floats through the ages, viewers encounter animated representations of key historical periods. The designers carefully crafted each character to reflect the era authentically while maintaining a whimsical charm.
  • Dynamic Typography: Animated text appeared dynamically, providing historical insights as the ticket traversed through different periods. This approach not only informed but also engaged the audience with relevant information.
  • Final Reveal: The video ends with a strong image of the ticket filling the screen. It invites viewers to explore Cardiff Castle’s history in person.

Production & Execution

The execution phase involved a meticulous blend of production techniques to ensure a polished final product:

  • Live-Action Filming: Capturing Cardiff Castle’s architectural grandeur required extensive filming inside the castle grounds. This footage served as the foundation for integrating animated elements seamlessly.
  • Animated Motion Graphics: Each historical character underwent detailed design and animation processes, ensuring they interacted flawlessly with their surroundings. This approach bridged the gap between past and present, enriching the viewer’s experience.
  • Advanced Compositing Techniques: The team combined animated characters and the floating ticket with live-action footage. They used motion tracking and compositing to do this. This technique preserved the authenticity of the historical setting while enhancing visual engagement.
  • Upbeat music and sound design: This helped set the mood and tell the story. There was no traditional voiceover used. An upbeat soundtrack and meticulously crafted sound effects breathed life into each scene.

Post-Production & Animation Process

The post-production phase focused on refining animation details to maximise visual impact:

  • Rigging & Animation: Characters were meticulously rigged for animation, allowing for fluid movements and interactions with the floating ticket. Initial animations focused on primary movements, while subsequent passes added nuanced details.
  • Adding Finer Details: In the second pass, we introduced more intricate hand-drawn frame-by-frame elements, such as facial expressions, flowing garments, and subtle gestures. This added depth and realism to the characters, making them feel more lifelike and expressive.
  • Lighting & Texture Application: Final touches included applying lighting effects and textures to animated characters, harmonising them with the live-action environment. These enhancements contributed to a cohesive visual narrative that immersed viewers in Cardiff Castle’s historical ambiance.

Additional Insights: Behind the Scenes and Lessons Learned

Making an animated motion graphics piece of this size and complexity always brings surprises. This project for Cardiff Castle was no different. Beyond the technical execution, much of the project’s success hinged on collaboration, iteration, and adaptability.

One of the best parts of the process was working closely with Cardiff Council’s heritage and tourism teams. Their strong knowledge of the castle’s history helped guide the story.

It also made sure that all visual elements were historically accurate. We discussed culture, architecture, and important moments to highlight. This kept the animation true to history while still being creative and engaging.

A significant learning curve came in refining the visual tone of the piece. Early drafts had a more cartoonish style.

However, testing and reviews showed that a refined, textured look worked better. This new look balanced whimsy and authenticity. This change in style was possible because of our flexible animation process.

We also conducted user testing sessions, particularly with family audiences and school groups. Their feedback helped us streamline the pacing and clarify certain transitions. For example, dynamic typography was not in the original storyboard. We added it later to help viewers understand better and stay engaged, especially younger audiences.

Deliverables & Impact

The culmination of these efforts resulted in a compelling video experience that resonated widely:

  • Digital Distribution: The final video was prominently featured on Cardiff Council’s official channels and distributed across digital platforms. Its accessibility online ensured broad exposure, captivating audiences beyond geographic boundaries.

  • Educational Value: By creatively blending entertainment with historical education, the video succeeded in making Cardiff Castle’s rich heritage accessible and engaging. It sparked curiosity and encouraged visitors to explore the castle’s storied past firsthand.

  • Innovative Showcase: This project exemplified a synergy of creativity, technical expertise, and storytelling finesse. It celebrated Cardiff Castle’s history and showed how animated motion graphics can help explain the past.
